Abstract
A green spotting of the shanks of Ancona chickens is described. The trait is mainly conditioned by a sex-linked allele, id^a. Only a portion of the shank scales show green spotting due to small aggregates of melanin in the dermis; the number of aggregates per scale also varies. In crosses, involving males carrying id^a on other stocks with Id, the expression of id^a in the pullet progeny is fully as intense as that produced by the ida or id+ alleles.
