i've read that some cocks are not fertile, especially the big breed than brahma or orpington. my breeds are only small-fowl than italianer ancona and hamburg. the cocks are always active with the hens! maybe silkies(moroseta) don't bear the cold than other breeds so the don't produce spermatozzons. if the winter is particullary cold and long the production of fertile eggs is not possible.

Bonjour,

Hm, here in Pietrasanta the temperature in this moment is 12 -15 and sunny, in the morning theres " la brina" a thin layer of white ice on the green grass in the morning. I have a white moroseta that lay one egg almost every day, one buff one as well. The buff one was the one that sat on the eggs in December and I kept her alone, because the others where picking on her when I put her with the others. Today I put her with the others.
My plan was to wait and see what the chickens would produce by themself this spring, but then curiosity got the cat and I put 4 eggs of the white hen in my incubator. Then I continued to put the daily egg inside.
Well, I dont know how it will end, but I can see the formation, the spider in 3 of them so far!
I was not sure the cook was doing his job, since he was a very timid dutch breed and the white hen was the dominant one.
My blue morogirl has not deposed yet, as far as i know...
As soon as I put the buff girl inside my pearlgray Gandalf did his job. When I let the white and blue ones in ,they had been let out for a stroll, the buff one had to sink to the ground to show her submissivness! She looked almost like a "Struzzo"! But its better for her to be in company, she has had more than a month to eat herself up to her usual strength!
I am very curious to see if we will have any black moro chicks, shortly before carneval, since that should be the outcome of a white/splash female and pearlgreay rooster! : )
